The Konrad-Adenauer-House is the most strikingly distinctive building in the newly constructed complex in what is known as the "Tiergarten Triangle". The southern part of Tiergarten, known as the so-called "Klingelhöfer Triangle", has played a leading role in the cultural and spiritual life of the city. Following its complete destruction in World War II, the fallow land was used as a circus and fairgrounds.
In November of 1995, the Senate Administration for City Development, Environmental Protection and Traffic drafted a city 'innovative constructional ideas contest' for the southern portion of the Klingelhöfer Triangle. The concept developed by office associates Machleidt + Partner, Walther Stepp, was realized. It called for the construction of the territory using the traditional Berliner block-edge construction, that is arranged around a inner park. Two years later, in January 1997, a differenciated elaboration of the concept was initiated at a workshop proceeding by the Architectural Workshop of the Senate Administration for Construction, Living and Traffic, in the district of Tiergarten and the project developer Groth + Graalfs. Also present among the eight other national and international architectural offices that submitted their proposals were Petzinka, Pink, and Partner from Düsseldorf. After a highly competetive architectural contest, they received the nomination for the design of the Konrad-Adenauer-House.
With the signing of the city constructional contract on May 20, 1998, between the state Berlin, the district Tiergarten and Groth + Graalfs, this culturally and historically unique area reawakened to new life.
On June 30, 1997, the CDU National Management Committee chose the perfectly city-centrally located Tiergarten Triangle as its new party headquarters. The deciding factor for this location was its exceptional positioning in the new political center, surrounded by the office of the Federal President of Germany, the governmental quarters, as well as embassies, scientific institutions, and the representation of states in the federal republic. The Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation is also located in close proximity to the party headquarters.
